Voice translation for iPhone

Talk to someone new.
Keep looking at them.

Translavia helps two people who speak different languages have a real, spoken conversation. One of you speaks, the phone listens, and the translation is played aloud. Then the other answers. No passing a screen back and forth.

How it works

A conversation, taken in turns. The phone just carries the words across.

  1. 01

    You speak

Say what you mean, naturally, in your own language. Translavia records your turn.

  2. 02

    They hear it

Your words are translated and played aloud in their language by a synthesized voice, so their eyes can stay on you.

  3. 03

    They answer

It works in both directions. Their reply comes back to you, spoken in your language.

Conversations happen one turn at a time. Translavia does not translate two people talking over each other, and like any translation, the result can contain mistakes worth double checking when it matters.

Example conversation

A platform, a stranger, a train to catch.

Step through a scripted exchange between a Swedish traveller and someone who speaks English. This is a pre-written illustration that runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is recorded, sent or translated live.

  1. Press play, or step through one turn at a time.

Languages

Your language stays put. Theirs can change.

Translavia remembers the phone owner's language, so you are not choosing it every time. The other side is a priority target you can switch to suit whoever you meet.

Saved owner language

Swedish

Priority target

English

These are the defaults. Both are configurable in the app's settings.

Travelling somewhere else next month? Change the target before you go and the conversation picks up from there.

Privacy, plainly

Two different things happen to your voice. Here is exactly where each one happens.

Voice matching stays on your iPhone

You can optionally teach Translavia to recognise one specific owner's voice. That matching runs entirely on the iPhone and is separate from translation. It is off unless you choose to use it.

Translation uses the cloud

To translate, the audio of a spoken turn is sent to a configured translation server. That needs an internet connection and a server set up for the app.

No connection means no translation. Translavia does not translate offline. This website uses a scripted demonstration, does not access your microphone, and does not ask for personal details.

Release information

Ready for your next conversation.

Translavia is available on the App Store for iPhone. Speak a phrase or take turns in a two-way conversation and hear the translation aloud. Online translation requires internet access and is subject to the usage limits shown in the app. Offline translation remains an experiment in test builds, not a feature of the public release.

The hardest part of meeting someone new should be saying hello. Not the language.
